I donât know how long we stay out by the canyon, but I want to get back before Dadâs home. Bailey and I slip our feet inside our shoes, and I help Mom with hers.
At home, I grab three bottles of water from the fridge and hand one to Bailey. âWe havenât done much drawing,â I tell her. âMaybe we can get together at your house? I mean, if we donât finish it at school.â
âThatâd be good.â Bailey says, and we go out to the living room. I twist open the water bottle for Mom.
âItâs like youâre the mom, huh?â Bailey asks.
I forget how much Bailey notices things, how much she understands. âYeah, itâs been like that a lot more.â
As we walk back to the kitchen, we stop in front of the broken frame.
âWhen I said you could replace it, I didnât mean forever,â Bailey says.
âNo, I knew what you meant, like maybe itâs time for something new.â But Iâm not sure Iâm ready for that.
âYou can still have this one. All you have to do is get a new frame.â
Sheâs right. The actual sketch isnât damaged at all. âYeah, I can fix it.â
But I donât want Dad to see it before I tell him what happened. I take the broken frame to my room and slide it under my bed.
âI thought it was your mom who liked ocean stuff?â Bailey stares at the ocean poster and at the ceiling over my bed where a dolphin poster hangs. Itâs a photograph of a real one, with just its head poking out of the water.
âIn every picture Iâve seen of dolphins,â Bailey says as she sits down in front of my desk, âwhy do they always look like theyâre smiling?â
âMy mom would say itâs because being a dolphin would make you happy pretty much all the time.â
âIs your mom the reason you wanted to paint the ocean mural?â
âYeah, I guess so.â And then I say, âItâs weird to be around someone losing her memory.â
âIâm sorry,â Bailey says. I guess itâs her turn now.
I stare up at the word âdreamâ on the bottom of the poster. âIâm always wondering nowâwhat her dreams are like. You know how a regular personâs dreams are filled with images of what happened to them that day or what happened to them last week or last year?â
I sit down on my bed. âSince those images are unreachable for my mom, I think her dreams are filled with the ocean. The whole time sheâs asleep, all she sees is ocean life or a dolphin breaching the water, swimming for miles and miles. Itâs kind of like those videos of a fireplace people have on their TVs or tanks with colorful fish swimming, trying to create a feeling of calm.â
Bailey and I both stare up at the poster, like I do most nights. It makes it easy to fall asleep, knowing that maybe thatâs what Mom sees, too, when she closes her eyes.
Someday Iâm going to take it down, though.
